2010 sees us here at Lindon celebrating 5 years of Stud SAMM breeding. Every challenge we put in front of this breed it laps it up and asks for more. At time of writing this we have received just over half our yearly rainfall with two weeks to go till the end of December. A little dry to say the least. The SAMM ewes scanned 147%, including maidens, in lamb under commercial conditions, zero hand feeding! We marked 128% lambs to ewes joined, a great result considering the season and the district average of sub 50%. We weaned all the lambs the other day to find that we were only down 1 lamb. I have never weaned the same percentage as marked before; this result speaks volumes for the fertility and survivability of the breed.

We are extremely proud of the results we have achieved this year in carcase comps; second in the heavy lamb class at this years EKKA. In the sale yards; breaking the QLD lamb price record of $168, and on the rail; $132 ave for all lambs sold.
The adaptability and versatility of the SAMM speaks for itself with Lindon Samm selling rams in 2009 from Richmond in Queensland south to Cressy in Tasmania and almost everywhere in between. To those of you who don’t know us or our sheep our motto is “what you see is what you get”. All our sheep are untouched, untreated and not force fed so you as the clients don’t get any surprises. Our focus remains on producing rams ready to work offering Meat and Wool opportunities.
As stated in previous years we remain committed to providing as much info and assistance to the marketing of our clients lambs; either store or finished, and wool. We are excited to release our latest E-Marketing network. Those of you who are interested please send us an email or ask us on sale day for details. All it involves is to use the data base of clients we now have, to market their products quickly and effectively via email to as many customers as possible. We have had a great response to this so far!
After a year full of achievements and accolades for the SAMM breed 2010 is upon us. The year all of our (SAMM breeders) planets align. By this I mean;
• Record lamb prices,
• Record low ewe numbers in Australia, and
• The 2010 Mulesing deadline
These three points only spell more money to those of you breeding SAMMs. The SAMM is now recognised as a true prime lamb. The record low numbers of breeding ewes in Australia can only be good for breeders using SAMM rams as they are a true self replacing maternal meat sheep with Merino wool. And last but by no means least, the 2010 Mulesing deadline. By using Lindon Samm genetics you will negate the need for mulesing faster than using any other Merino based breed.
Notwithstanding the use of all available technologies, our motto still remains “what you see is what you get”. All our sheep are untouched, untreated and not force fed so you as the clients don’t get any surprises. Our focus remains in producing rams ready to work offering Meat and Wool opportunities.
Call us crazy, but we do not put ay preventative treatment on any animal in our flock. We do not mules and we also do not crutch any of our sheep. Anything that gets struck, either breech or body gets culled.
As seedstock producers it is important to us to provide the best product we can and always remain in touch with commercial reality.
Johnnie personally shears all the sale team rams giving him a chance to have a good look at each one.
All sale rams have micron tests and Lambplan ASBVs.

ALL Lindon Prime SAMM principal, John Beynon, wanted last week was a full clearance at his inaugural on-property sale. He got it within 10 minutes of the Landmark-run Helmsman
auction opening for business, with the board rapidly filling up with bids.
The Uralla stud cleared its offering to mostly New England buyers, who paid an average of $895, to top at $1100. “When we first started, we thought New England would be the hardest nut to crack with SAMMs,” said Mr Beynon, who, with wife, Lyndie, was “over the moon” at the result.
“Because of the number of discontented woolgrowers, it’s proving the easiest.” Helping the breed’s uptake was a valuable endorsement from processor Country Fresh Australasia chief executive officer, Graham Jackson, who said at a Lindon SAMM field day that SAMM progeny represented equal value to crossbred lambs in processing performance, with a regular additional premium for the right type of SAMM skins.
Top price of the day was paid by Ray Nutt, “Kalangi”, Llangothlin, who invested $1100 in an August 2006- drop ram which weighed 94 kilograms in November 2007 and scanned an eye muscle depth of 44 millimetres. He also paid $1050 for a second ram. Mr Nutt, pictured above with Mr Beynon, said he had bought some Lindon SAMMs last year and had been impressed with the results. “They’ve shown good growth rates, good lamb performance and efficiency of production, plus they have a wool background,” he said.
Tim and Karen Wright of nearby “Lana” were the volume buyers of the day, picking
up seven rams for an average of $850. Mr Beynon’s opening comments that none of the ramshad taken any body strike, despite receiving 550mm of rain during summer, must
have reassured Andy McCormack, “Snowfields”, in the high rainfall area of Niangala,
who collected four rams for an average of $862. Achill Pastoral Company, Armidale, also took four rams for an average of $950. Several went into the Granite Belt area of southern Queensland and to Warialda.
